On Black-Box Transformations in Downward-Closed Environments
نویسنده
چکیده
Black-box transformations have been extensively studied in algorithmic mechanism design as a generic tool for converting algorithms into truthful mechanisms without degrading the approximation guarantees. While such transformations have been designed for a variety of settings, Chawla et al. showed that no fully general black-box transformation exists for single-parameter environments. In this paper, we investigate the potentials and limits of black-box transformations in the priorfree (i.e., non-Bayesian) setting in downward-closed single-parameter environments, a large and important class of environments in mechanism design. On the positive side, we show that such a transformation can preserve a constant fraction of the welfare at every input if the private valuations of the agents take on a constant number of values that are far apart, while on the negative side, we show that this task is not possible for general private valuations.

Functionally closed sets and functionally convex sets in real Banach spaces
Let $X$ be a real normed space, then $C(subseteq X)$ is functionally convex (briefly, $F$-convex), if $T(C)subseteq Bbb R $ is convex for all bounded linear transformations $Tin B(X,R)$; and $K(subseteq X)$ is functionally closed (briefly, $F$-closed), if $T(K)subseteq Bbb R $ is closed for all bounded linear transformations $Tin B(X,R)$. We improve the Krein-Milman theorem ...
متن کاملOn the Impossibility of Black-Box Transformations in Mechanism Design
A fundamental question in algorithmic mechanism design is whether any approximation algorithm for a single-parameter social-welfare maximization problem can be turned into a dominant-strategy truthful mechanism for the same problem (while preserving the approximation ratio up to a constant factor). A particularly desirable type of transformations—called black-box transformations— achieve the ab...
متن کاملApplying Black-Box Testing to Model Transformations in the Model Driven Architecture Context
Testing model transformations has played a leading role with the dissemination of MDA in software development processes. Software testing based on black-box testing, together with the “category partitioning” method, can be efficiently used in order to conduct the verification of model transformations. This study employs software testing techniques to an ATL model transformation in the MDA conte...
متن کاملFinding External Indicators of Load on a Web Server via Analysis of Black-Box Performance Measurements
Traditional methods for system performance analysis have long relied on a mix of queuing theory, detailed system knowledge, intuition, and trial-anderror. These approaches often require construction of incomplete gray-box models that can be costly to build and difficult to scale or generalize. In this thesis, we present a black-box analysis method to discover the amount of load on a web server ...
متن کاملImaging the Earth using Green ’ s theorem 1
The Earth is a big place: its radius is about 6400 km. In comparison, the deepest boreholes drilled are about 10 km deep. We thus have little opportunity to take direct measurements or samples inside the Earth: it is mostly inaccessible. And even for the upper 10 km that we can sample, the cost of drilling deep boreholes is very high. This means that inferences about the Earth’s interior are la...
